Kalamkari Dupattas
I’m sharing images of few of my cotton and chiffon kalamkari dupattas. I love kalamkari, a unique Indian art of hand-painting of intricate designs on fabrics using eco-friendly, natural, vegetable dyes and gums. This art is ancient and has its roots at Machilipatnam and Kalahasti, Andhra Pradesh.

I am going to Vizag next week… can u tell me where I can find these there?
I have picked them up from the weaver who sells them during annual exhibitions. You can find them at Fabindia and probably Prapancha (near Waltair Club).

Oh Sailu…I used to be a kalamkari freak until sometime ago, then i realised I’ve been picking up so many of these and I stopped - but looking at your lovely collection, I want to get back to the plain kurta and mix and match with the kalamkari salwars and dupattas…in fact during my visit to HYD some months ago was when I realised the Andhra roots of Kalamkari…Fabindia has some lovely very soft cotton kalamkari sarees, but they price them unreasonably high!

Am a kalamkari fan too….the sad thing there are a lot of fake ones…that are mass-produced..
I haven’t seen ikat and kalamkari on one….where’s that from?
I buy them from a particular weaver who comes to Vizag once or twice a year. He told me that the dupatta had been sent to pochampalli for the ikat work and then brought back to the regular Kalamakari worker who worked on it.

Sailugaru, I buy them either at rex exports in hyd who is a whoelsaler for kalamkari and mangalagiri, you can customize the order or kalanjali or urvi.. I cant think of wearing synthetic clothing at all.. but Im forced to do that here… there is a lady in hyd who prints only a minimum of kalamkari on venkatagiri sarees basically done by the women in her NGO.. they are simply superb
